What is/are Flutamide Capsules?

FLUTAMIDE blocks the effect of the male hormone called testosterone. It is used in combination with another medication to treat prostate cancer. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. Flutamide is an antiandrogen. It works in the body to prevent the actions of androgens (male hormones).

What should I tell my health care providers before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• cigarette smoker
• glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
• hemoglobin M disease
• lactose intolerance
• liver disease
• an unusual or allergic reaction to flutamide, other chemotherapy, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

Flutamide is not indicated for use by women. Flutamide is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that it is known to harm an unborn baby. Do not take flutamide if your partner is planning to become pregnant.

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Flutamide is usually taken three times a day (every 8 hours). Follow your doctor's instructions. Finish the full course prescribed by your doctor or health care professional, even if the capsules make you feel sick. Do not stop taking except on the advice of your doctor or health care professional.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
